Research Essay on “Pride and Prejudice”
Introduction
Pride and Prejudice is a tale that is associated with clarity and sharp intelligence. The author, Jane Austen in her work uses language styles such as indirect speech and social annotations to illustrate a comic love story. The setting of the play is viewed back to the 18th century, a time in which women were presented and treated as subordinate to men. Her book Pride and Prejudicerelegates sexist's stereotypes of women during the 18th-century era.
Thesis Statement
By analyzing the majorcharacters in the book namely Elizabeth and Darcy, this paper will discuss how the sexists’ stereotypes regardedwomen as the inferior sex in the society. In addition, another character Mrs. Bennet will be examined whose role optimizes the traditional mindset of the 18th-century folk. Her main aim is to successfully get her five daughters married. Far from that, Elizabeth and Darcy’s story shows the foundation of misunderstanding between male and female genders, the pride of Darcy and the prejudice of Elizabeth prevents them from attaining a common based argument.
Summary
In the novel, marriage is the only option available for women failure to which it is considered as a social misfit. A factor of social critique and gender stereotypes understanding is revealed to the reader by Austen. Rather than bring out the sexist stereotype, the main theme of the story "sexist stereotype" is displayed prominently in Pride and Prejudice as a different gender and social standing intermingle.
Elizabeth is not considered a stereotypical woman since she is a modern woman, she does not value social status as compared to any other character, also she can act against the society around her. According to Austen (6), she portrays the character of her mother Mrs. Bennet who states that she would leave to care for nothing if one or all of her daughters are contentedly settled at Netherfield. Every woman bares that common thinking and it strengthens the sexist stereotypes of women. Consequently, Elizabeth rationally and intellectually follows her mind always and acts towards what she thinks is best with intelligence. Nonetheless, Elizabeth is different from the other people around her even though she is not perfect and not always right.
Present-day readers may view pride and prejudice to the perspective that it only shows stereotypes of women fully dominated by marriage. In the novel, Mrs. Bennet plans to acquire wealthy and respectable “good” husbands for her daughters. In Britain's rigid class society, women protected their status without the intention of remainingvirtuous but to remain marriageable. This clearly shows why marriage in the novel is an obsession and limited choices were left for middle-class British women when it comes to marriage. As Charlotte Lucas chooses to marry any husband rather than remaining single proves the fact of this view and is repeated time and again in the novel. This is also linked to the social fact that women could get only low paid jobs as servants and little education while the middle-class were socially bound to bear children and fully rely on men for financial aid (Kubitschek 237).
In closing, pride and prejudice enhance the disarrangements of obstacles separating men and women in society. In the novel, sexist stereotypes of women are reinforced in a manner that a woman is constrained to consider the way they imagine. Mrs. Bennet, for instance, possesses every right in wishing her daughters the best and in that she has an aim and considered distinct from other individuals whose major concerns depend on bread-making issues even though she is not superior or inferior. Towards forming opinions about Darcy, her view about opinion and marriage presented guidance for women in her age. Hence, the novel reinforces sexist stereotypes of women as they are unlike men in this aspect.
Conclusion
In conclusion, to answer the question “Does Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice reinforce or erode sexist stereotypes of women?” variousaspects are highlighted in the essay. Jane Austenintroduces women with powerful opinions, self-dependent, and definitely cannot be classified as stereotypical though female characters such as Elizabeth. Also, Elizabeth becomes rigid according to her view about women's status, their right to choose life partner, right to hold beliefs, and reveals her instinct in various parts of the novel however she was kind of wrong about Darcy. This shows the prejudice on Elizabeth's part and in turn reinforces sexist stereotypes of women because they are different in nature. Therefore, the final analysis of this essay proves that Pride and Prejudice erodes and works against female stereotypes.
